SMUD Charge@Home

SMUD currently advertises rebates of up to $600 to help eligible residential customers with EV charging equipment and/or electrical circuit installation.

Depending on the project, available incentives may include:

• Up to $100 toward an eligible EV charging unit
• Up to $200 toward an eligible circuit-sharing or energy-management device
• Up to $500 toward an eligible EV charging circuit installed through the SMUD Contractor Network

The amounts reimbursed cannot exceed the customer’s actual eligible costs. Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis and remain subject to available funding.

Who May Qualify?

SMUD’s standard Charge@Home program has specific customer, vehicle, equipment, and installation requirements.

Current requirements include:

• The installation address must be served by a residential SMUD account
• The plug-in vehicle must be registered at the same address
• The applicant and SMUD customer of record must meet the program’s account and documentation requirements
• The charger or related device must appear on SMUD’s applicable eligibility list
• Eligible chargers must meet the program’s output, certification, warranty, and ENERGY STAR requirements
• Circuit-installation incentives must use the approved contractor pathway
• Required receipts, invoices, vehicle registration, and permit documentation must be provided

These requirements should be checked before selecting a charger or contractor. Purchasing equipment first and checking eligibility later can result in a missed rebate.

Additional Help for Income-Eligible Households

SMUD currently offers a separate program for eligible customers enrolled in or qualifying for its Energy Assistance Program Rate.

The program may include:

• A Level 2 EV charger
• Electrical work needed for a qualifying 32-amp charger on a 40-amp circuit
• Installation through SMUD’s designated contractor process

The program does not cover an electrical-panel upgrade. The charger is installed as close to the panel as practical, and additional placement modifications are not included.

Eligibility includes income qualification, an eligible single-family home, ownership or lease of a plug-in vehicle, and compliance with SMUD’s account and property-authorization requirements.

What About Federal or California Incentives?

The federal residential Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit applied to qualifying equipment placed in service through June 30, 2026. That deadline has passed for new installations completed after that date.

California, regional, and utility programs can change as funding opens or closes. Some programs apply only to multifamily housing, businesses, public charging, particular geographic areas, or income-qualified households rather than standard single-family installations.

For that reason, any current offer should be verified directly with the sponsoring agency before relying on it in the project budget.

A qualifying rebate can make Level 2 home charging more affordable, but the incentive should be considered during planning—not after the charger has already been purchased and installed.
